Let's Hear it for Milwaukee!

First of all, this website, http://www.atomicbooks.com/ is amazing! They have an enormous collection of interesting books and music. The book that happened to catch my eye (today) is Graphic USA. And guess what....one of the featured cities is MILWAUKEE!!!! Way to be cool, Mil-town.

Abundantly illustrated and lovingly laid out, Graphic USA is like having hip, insightful chaperones in multiple cities across the United States: graphic designers living in 25 metropolises (from capitals of cool like New York, Portland, Miami and L.A. to less predictable locales such as Anchorage, Charleston, St. Louis and Phoenix) were invited to write and illustrate mini-guides to their stomping grounds. With listings for places to stay, bars, restaurants, galleries and clubs, the book gives readers everything they need to live it up like natives in the know. From the blue-collar dive bar that serves tumblers of local whiskey to the slick hotel designed by the hippest architect in town, or the weird restaurant in the strip mall that makes the best breakfast burrito this side of the border--the designer-contributors to Graphic USA have got you covered. All this user-friendly information is accompanied by brilliantly vivid illustrations that reflect the designers' experiences of their cities.
A beautiful object as well as a useful guide, this volume offers a truly unique insight into the heart of American culture. The cities included in this book are: Anchorage, Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Charleston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Mineappolis, New Orleans, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Providence, San Francisco, Seattle, St Louis and Washington D.C.

and for a slightly more positive post....

I love these road trip/highway/driving-themed photos!
And tomorrow...tomorrow lovely Suzanne is posting something amazing.

Note to myself and others...do not stop in stockton

I drove over 600 miles today! That's the good news! Less than 400 to go tomorrow...

I checked into a motel in Stockton a little while ago, and here's what happened...

- reservation wasn't found

- checked in, emptied bags out of car and walked up the 3 flights of stairs to my room, with 200 bags (no, I don't know why I have to bring all of this stuff to my room for the night)

- heard 'whooshing' sound while walking up the stairs, thought I was imaging things

- key didn't work

- hauled everything back down to the office, got new key

- hauled stuff back up the stairs, realized whooshing sound was my hairspray spraying all over everything in my giant reusable plastic bag
- took everything out of the bag, one by one, to clean the hairspray off in the sink

- sink didn't drain....at all

- no towels in room, went back down to office to get towels

- brought towels back up to room, sink still full of water
- decided to screw it and watch some tv

- tv didn't work....at all

-called front desk to ask if I could change rooms, was told I could go nextdoor

- went down to the front desk to get new key

- that key didn't work either

- more, more, more.....but now my tv works so SCREW IT!

I think I can, I think I can.......

This is my oh.........956th drive down Hwy 5 to California? The first couple of trips were beautiful. Now I'm just anxious to get to my destination already! And be done with it!!! Before leaving the house this morning I did one last internet search for ways to occupy your time while driving (alone). I was expecting the typical suggestions - downloading digital copies of books, updating your podcasts, etc. But check out this guy's tips that I found on http://www.city-data.com/forum/travel/839304-keeping-yourself-entertained-long-solo-road.html

Line up animal cookies on the dash / heater vents (non-frosted) and make up stories that rhyme with signs / cars / trucks I see. (I eat ONE, if I can get through the story with out losing my thought.

Eat M&M's by finding mile markers with same number or divisible by the number of letters in the color. There are various ways to play this game, the best on your diet is to reach in the bag and get one who's color matches the mile marker, Then do the math, otherwise, wrong color = you wait and draw again till you score.

I will also try to make a hard candy last 30+ miles.
My preference is night driving, as I would rather deal with truckers and drunks, than soccer moms, school kids, and 'Sunday drivers' (+it makes my games more challenging).

My car gets 52 mpg and has a 25 gal tank, so I don't stop much. (every 1000 miles or so). I am also a professional driver, so got in the mode "not rolling, not making money" Be consistant, Just don't hurry,
